Appeared before press with a bipartisan group from Cong. to announce our support for the Gramm-Rudman plan to balance budget over next 5 yrs. Their plan is virtually identical to our own plan I’d suggested to our people & which we had not yet announced.

Then an N.S.P.G. meeting re the Philippines. Sen. Laxalt present. I’ve asked him to be my emissary to Pres. Marcos. We’re trying to intercede & prevent a communist insurgency. Then I was on my way to Parsippany N.J. for a Repub. fundraiser in behalf of Gov. Kean & cand’s. for the Assembly. The Gov. has done a great job & has made N.J. literally a model state. The crowd was enthusiastic. Then we flew back to Andrews where Nancy was waiting & helicoptered to Camp David.
