Good meeting with House & Sen. Repub. leadership. I reported on meetings with King Hussein & Shevardnadze. Then we got on trade matters, the deficit & the debt ceiling. Also the farm bill. I’ve been talking up a deficit plan in the West Wing & now find 2 Sen’s. of ours Phil Gramm & W. Rudman have come along with the same idea—a 5 yr. plan of deficit reductions down to zero 5 yrs. out & then a balanced budget goes into effect. We’ll work together on that. N.S.C. was brief—a report by V. Walters on U.N. & his world trip. Then a visitor Dr. Kim of Korea who is here to talk about some trade problems we have.
Went over to Commerce bldg. & addressed Convention of Inter-pol. Did a couple of tapings & upstairs for more desk work then a reception for Citizens for Am.
