An easy day as to meetings etc. Saw 7 Ambassadors & their familys off. Had a session with Dick Wirthlin & saw his latest polling results—still holding pretty steady.

Most important meeting was with Cap on nominee to be Sec. of Air Force (Verne Orr is retiring). Cap & Bud are on opposite sides on this one—divided between 2 candidates. I have to come down on Caps side on this one. It isn’t going to be easy telling Bud, he’s all up in arms on this—threatens to quit. A phone call from Margaret Thatcher on a communications system for military. Eng. & France are both trying to sell us one. I hope we can come down on the side of Eng. Spent afternoon up in W.H. Study doing mail.
