Key Facts
President Reagan participates in a meeting with members of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board (PFIAB).
President Reagan attends a security meeting in which he discusses Ambassador Matclock's recent trip to Moscow.
First meeting—a kind of mixed up morning. V.P. is back. We talked a little about the hearings. Then a short meeting with GOP Cong. leadership—Bob M., Bob Dole, Trent Lott & Al Simpson & my gang. We discussed finding a strategy to cope with Dem’s. obvious program of railroading through a number of measures contrary to everything we’ve been achieving.
N.S.C.—Geo. S. attended because Ambas. Matlock is back from Moscow & briefed us on situation there. He believes the Soviets do want an arms reduction agreement. But they’ll push for all the concessions they can get.
Some desk time then a meeting with PFIAB—for them to report on the security problems at our Embassys—particularly in Moscow. We heard some astounding things about the Soviets ability to bug our installations. Their recommendation is that we take action to counter what they’ve installed.
Then met with Col. Krulak (Marine Corps) a newcomer to our Mil. Office. He is the son of my old friend Lt. Gen. (retired) Brute Krulak. Then a haircut, a teeth cleaning, a sneeze shot & upstairs. Some T.V. time with the hearings on Ollie N. & Bud McFarlane.
