President Reagan signs the Statue of Liberty Coin Bill.
President Reagan hosts a cocktail meeting to discuss the budget resolution conference.
Met with Repub. Cong. leadership—subjects bud. deficit, tax plan & legislative agenda. I made a pitch that we heal our difs. & prove that Repubs. are able to govern. Another regional press luncheon—took Q’s. I’m always impressed with the dif. between these press & media people from outside the beltway and the W.H. press corps. These people ask Q’s. that are legitimate requests for news not traps.
Signed a bill to sell 3 coins—a silver $, a five $ gold piece & a 1⁄2 $ to raise money for the Statue of Liberty refurbishing. A lengthy taping session then an hour & 1⁄2 on the patio with leaders—both parties—to try & end the budget impasse. Made some headway but Tip was his usual pol. self.
