Key Facts
President Reagan flies to New York City and participates in a ceremony to commend a group of private citizens for their contributions in stopping crimes.
President Reagan addresses a Join Session of Congress on Central America.
A brief time in the office & then off to N.Y. They are still futzing with the speech. Pat & Bill flew out with me to N.Y. I spent what flying time there was working—no chance for the visit I would like to have had. Mayor Koch met me & we went to the 30th precinct N.Y.P.D. I met a group of heros—part of a program called crime stoppers. These were ordinary people like you see on the street every day but who have performed heroic deeds in preventing crimes etc. They ranged from kids to a grandmother, a Rabbi etc. There must be something good about a society where people like these can show such bravery & concern for their fellow man. Then I addressed the Am. Newspaper publishers Assn. & took Q&A. Back to the plane & the W.H. 8 P.M.—addressed Joint Session of Cong. & gave speech we’ve all been working on. Got 3 standing ovations with some Demos. on 2, & all of them on the 3rd. That was on the line that we had no intention of sending troops to Central America. I think we scored well with the T.V. audience.
