President and Mrs. Reagan attend the annual Christmas in Washington at the National Building Museum.
A Soviet military transport plane crashes, killing seventy-nine people involved in the Armenian earthquake relief efforts.
Partly cloudy & about 20 degrees. A brief look at the T.V. talk shows & at 11:30 wheels up on Marine 1 & off to Wash. We arrived about noon & were greeted by a fair sized crowd including a number of children. Got word that a Soviet cargo plane carrying soldiers supplies to the earthquake area crashed on landing & all 79 aboard were killed.
Lunch in the Atrium—then a short afternoon of cleaning out drawers. Then downstairs for photos with beautiful Xmas decorations—over to the Soviet Embassy—signed the condolence book for earthquake victims. Then on to the annual “Xmas in Wash.” Jimmy Stewart, Shirley Jones, Vicki Farr [Carr] & others—a wonderful Xmas program. Then back to W.H. for dinner in front of the T.V.
