Off to N.Y., N.J. & Conn. First stop was Temple Hillel in Nassau County N.Y. Not a campaign speech. The Temple was jammed. I believe I settled for them the issue of separation of Church & state. Was very well rcvd. Had lunch at Rabbi Friedmans home. Then Marine 1 to Fairfield Conn. This was an outdoor rally—a huge crowd. Did a bill signing afterward of a bill to create a wetlands refuge on the S.W. Conn. shore. Marine 1 to Hackensack N.J. 5:25 P.M. another outdoor event and again the same roaring reception. A.F.1 to Andrews—Nancy met me there & we went to Camp David.
