N.S.C. & more on the Arms negotiations. Rumor has it the Soviets may take a walk in a last effort to sway pub. opinion in Europe. Some on our side want us to come up with an additional proposal. That is lousy negotiating strategy. It’s time for the Soviets to come up with a proposal of their own. We cant keep changing our proposals every time they say “nyet.” Went to lunch (Columbus Day) at the Italian Embassy. Ambas. & Mrs. Petrignani are lovely people. They had a real Italian-Am. mix—Anna Marie Alberghetti, Tommy Lasorda—the dodgers, Boom Boom Mancini, Cong.man Rodino etc. It was a very pleasant affair. Geo. S. & I met in office after lunch. Israel is facing real ec. problems & is talking of switching it’s money to U.S. Dollars. Did a radio tape for “Time Mag.” 60th anniversary. Tommy Lasorda stopped by with a 1981 Dodger World Series Bat autographed by whole team. Now I’m up in my study waiting for Nancy to come home from N.Y.
