In Rose garden presented medals to 2 young people chosen as heroes of the year. Ben Pionke at 10 yrs. of age rescued a 6 yr. old who had gone through the ice. Ben also broke thru but kept going & got the lad out. Carolyn Hartsock at 14 rescued 2 members of her family from their burning home. She was burned over 80% of her body. She was a sad thing to see—no use of her arms & her face a mass of purple disfiguring scars. I know she faces many operations. Did Q&A with T.V. execs. Had Lunch with V.P. He’s done a great job with a discontented former Ambassador we had to bring home. Interview with Dan Lambro. An Ec. briefing. Personnel meeting. Bill Smith has a man he wants desperately & we have another candidate. I think I’ll have to defer to Bill. Administrative Time—Nat. Security medal to 80 yr. old Kelly Johnson designer of the P-38—The 104 Phantom & a dozen other aircraft over the last 50 yrs. Said goodby to Gen. Hazel Johnson & Admiral Frances Shea who have 32 yrs. service in the Army & Navy nurse corps. Pinned a star on Col.—now Gen. John Tuck who heads up the W.H. Mil. detail. Rcv’d. report from Commission on Small & Minority business. Tonite the BBQ for Congress on S. Lawn. The Oakridge boys entertained and every one had fun.
