Back to meetings—1st V.P., Howard B. & Ken—a catchup on what’s coming up. Then Frank & Gen. Powell & some talk about P. Gulf & on the nuclear arms meeting coming up. Then desk time until 11:30 when I went to the East Room & addressed about 200 of our govt. appointees plus Cabinet members. It was a pep session for up coming battles.

Back to lunch—made a judge call—appointed one to circuit court in N.C. Then an N.S.P.G. meeting on the arms reduction talks—no decisions yet. A long stretch of desk time then 71 state legislative candidates from Miss. La. N.J. and Va.—greeting & photos in Roosevelt Rm. A haircut & upstairs. Paul Laxalt, Howard B. & Ken D. came upstairs—a short visit with Paul reporting on his short campaign from which he has just resigned. Maureen is back—Ted still here—dinner for 4.
