It’s wonderful with Congress away. I signed some bills & some photos. We had an N.S.C. meeting on Poland & agreed on a policy of lifting sanctions in stages based on the Polish govt’s. real adherence to an amnesty program etc.

In afternoon awarded 2 hero medals to a boy 11 who saved his 3 yr. old sister from their burning home & a 17 yr. old who rescued a man from a burning car that exploded less than a minute after he got him out.

Saw 3 Ambassadors & their families off to Nepal, Zaire & Kuwait. Then some desk work & mail.
