Schedule said office at 9:30—found it should have been 9. At 11 A.M. briefed 45 min’s. for a mini-press conf. in the Oval office. Made an opening statement at conf. 1 P.M. after lunching alone on the patio. It was a good session with Q’s. on the budget, S. Africa etc. & finally on my nose so I had a chance to correct the record. Did some paperwork & then up for a supposed nap. Actually I spent my time on homework—memos & such. I’m pleased with the press conf. I got to straighten the record on a number of things—the attacks on George S., friction with Sen. Repubs. etc.
