This was lobby day—I didn’t leave the residence until 7:30 pm to get ready for the 8 o’clock broadcast from the Oval Office. We had 2 meetings (large) in the East room—corporate lobbyists & Trade Assn. representatives. Then in between & all day Congressmen R. & D. singly in groups to ask their support for the tax program. One special meeting however was with Phil Habib who has returned from the middle east leaving a “cease fire” behind as his accomplishment. I have to see if there isn’t a medal for him. Also met with Gov. Fob James—Dem. who is doing a 14 city tour in support of our tax program. Now I’ve just finished my broadcast. The D’s are already screaming. Calls in the 1st hour were 629 pro—148 against.
