Left S. Lawn at 9 A.M. for Andrews then off in A.F.1 for River Dell High School in Oradell N.J. This was a rewarding day. The people of Oradell & the students & teachers of the High School have really put together a program against Drunk Driving & teen age drinking. Gov. Kean has supported this with a program that makes N.J. a leader in the drunk driving issue. My old friend Don Newcomb (former Dodger Great) was there as was the Gov. & a young (19 year old) man who spoke especially to the kids. He was a great high school athlete at 17 until driving while drunk he broke his neck—he’s now a paraplegic—well practically a quadriplegic. Has partial use of one arm. I spoke & announced our Fed. effort to get all states to raise the drinking age to 21.—Twenty-three states have it now. Then we flew (helicopter) on to Hartford Conn. There I addressed the convention of the Nat. Sheriffs Assn. Was very well rcvd. when I outlined what we are doing about crime. All in all a most rewarding day & finally back to the W.H. Mermie is here—Dennis left for Calif.
