Played a game on the leakers & the press. About 11 A.M. I phoned Paul Volcker in N.Y. & asked him to accept re-appointment as Chmn. of the Fed. Then I called Don Regan to tell him. Then I did my radio broadcast—I boiled down the prepared script & opened with my now handwritten announcement about Paul’s appt. Spent most of day doing the letters Anne Higgins sent over. Some were very moving. Storm broke open late P.M. Our ride of course had been cancelled.
