Students from James Madison High school present for our take off on S. Lawn, also a large crowd & Marine band. Students gave Nancy flowers & I got a lapel pin—U.S. flag. Out to Andrews & A.F.1. We had breakfast on the plane and about 2:30 Calif. time 8:30 Venice time dinner. At 9:42 Venice time it was still daylight—where we were it was 7:42 & 3:42 in Wash. Flight is 8 hrs. & 20 min. & we arrive at 11:20 P.M.

We were met by the Fanfanis & Ambas. & Mrs. Rabb. I reviewed the honor guard & then it was Marine 1 to [Villa] Condulmer—an ancient palace. Very beautiful but not quite as convenient as a Hilton hotel. It was about midnight when we arrived and 1:30 A.M. for lights out. I took a Dalmain & actually dropped off to sleep & awoke at 8:45. I sneaked out of bed & had breakfast. Nancy awoke at about 10 A.M.
