8:30 A.M. & Marine 1 took off from S. Lawn. We’re on our way to Ireland. At 9 A.M. it was A.F.1—6 hours & 20 min. later we landed at Shannon Airport.—With time change (5 hours) it was 8:20 P.M. Ambas. Kane & the Irish Chief of Protocol came aboard & escorted us down to the welcoming ceremony—Pres. Hillery, P.M.Fitzgerald—their wives & a number of other Cab. ministers. It was a formal ceremony complete with reviewing the troops. Then into a Marine 1 helicopter & on to Ashford Castle which would be our home for a couple of days.
