King Hassan of Morocco arrived. He presented me with a beautiful saddle which he designed himself, including a new safety feature on stirrups he invented. He’s quite a man. We had good talks & then a nice horseback ride out at Bill Marriott’s beautiful place in the Shenandoah valley. I was quite touched—the King said it was the best afternoon he’d ever had with any head of state. Nancy is very depressed about her father’s health & understandably so. I want so much to speak to him about faith. He’s always been an agnostic—now I think he knows fear for probably the 1st time in his life. I believe this is a moment when he should turn to God and I want so much to help him do that.
