Some talk about schedule changes. Then word that Sen. Byrd was planning to bring I.N.F. treaty on May 9 which is cutting it close with regard to the summit.
N.S.C.—Started with the P. Gulf—we sank or damaged 6 vessels. Govt. of Denmark may fall because of parliamentary action to ban Nuc. ships in Danish ports.
Both meetings were cut short because of a 9:30 A.M. meeting with Repub. Cong. Leadership meeting in Cab. room. First subject was a report by Frank C. & Admiral Crowe on our action in the Gulf against Iran. Everyone is approving what we did.
Second half was on trade bill and possibility of upholding my veto of bill comes down as it is. There is some optimism about that but it’s no sure thing. Then a miracle happened—the meeting broke up 10 min’s. early.
Desk time then Nancy joined me & we went over to E.O.B. for a tribute to Officers who lost their lives in the fight against drugs.
Back to the office—Nancy to the W.H. & lunch. A long period of desk time until an Ec. briefing with Jim B. Howard B., Ken D., Beryl Sprinkle & Alan Greenspan. Most of discussion was on economy & consensus was that ours is going to continue on the bright side.
Then some unusual visitors—about 16 former Heisman Trophy winners starting with the first one Jay Berwanger of U. of Chi. They are here to support one of the winners—Pete Dawkins who is cand. for Sen. in N.J. Tonite I’m appearing at a dinner in his behalf. All those others will be there also.
Sen. John Cooper came by with his brother & sister in law for a photo. They were followed by about 35 people from Calif.—a delegation from the Calif. Agricultural Leadership Program. It was a photo session but also a warm friendly get together. Stopped by Dr. for a sneeze shot & upstairs to an early dinner. After dinner dropped by reception for Pete Dawkins (Heisman Trophy winner) Cand. for U.S. Sen. from N.J. All the trophy winners were there. I made a campaign speech for him. Then it was over to the Marriott Hotel to address the Electronic Industries Assn. Dinner. I was a before dinner speaker—then home & mother.
