Saw Ambas. Wolfowitz & family off for Indonesia—we’ll be seeing him in Bali in a few weeks or so. All is quiet in the Gulf of Sidra—we’ll probably wind up the maneuvers tomorrow. An N.S.C. meeting re the subject of the machine tool industry. It is deteriorating badly. Mac Baldridge & Cap feel it is a Nat. security risk to let it keep going down hill due to foreign imports. Others N.S.C. etc. think no problem. I’ve made no final decision but frankly even though I’m against protectionism I think we must do something. An interesting lunch with 6 top Astronomers where I heard much about our fly by of Uranus & the photo mission to Halleys Comet. Was given some fascinating photos & souvenirs including a sound tape of what Uranus sounds like—it gives off a continuous sound.

Dick Wirthlin’s report illustrates how well the Sandinista disinformation network has done it’s job. Our people do not support what we’re trying to do in Nicaragua.

Fred Fielding & family came by. He’s returning to pvt. practice. Then a photo with Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Harris (Reuters)—he’s being transferred. A haircut, a visit with Cap for his report on Soviet mil. power & upstairs. Tomorrow Calif. here I come. Nancy went out a day early to visit her mother in Phoenix.
