* * *

Began the day with a breakfast meeting with Francois Mitterand (Pres. France) & his company & my own people in the Blue Room. It was a good meeting. We touched on trade matters & I got in some licks that we must work to present a return to protectionist policies. He agreed. He left to visit Ill. & Calif. & I went to the E.O.B. to speak to 225 of our management people. They’re a good bunch & morale is high. I took some Q&A’s. Back to the State Dining Rm. for lunch with a group of T.K.E. Alumni. I was awarded Tau Kappa Epsilon’s highest award “The Gold Eagle Award” & the Gold medal of the Interfraternity Council. George Shultz, Bud & I met for a strategy session on where we go with the Soviets. I think they are going to be cold & stiff necked for awhile. But we must not become supplicants. We’ll try to get agreement on a few lesser matters. Then a taping session—5 events. The Am. Preparedness Assn. Dinner, Marine Corps Scholarship fund, Am. Advertising Fed., Tribute to Lucille Ball & Nat. Council on Aging. Upstairs to work on speech for Gridiron Dinner tomorrow night.
