The space shuttle Discovery launches from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on the first secret; all-military shuttle mission.
Italian Defense Minister Spadolini came by. He was P.M. my first 2 yrs. in Wash. He is a staunch supporter in Europe of our policies. Over to E.O.B. to address the meeting of Latin Am. Legislators. Lunch with the V.P. George is going to visit 3 African countries for us & then attend the inauguration in Brazil.
Mac Baldridge came by to plug for the plan to consolidate the Dept. of Commerce & the International trade Rep. into one trade org. I know I have to come up with an answer soon but I’ve got to listen to some others—this subject really has 2 sides.
We had a Cabinet Council meeting to receive the report of the commission I appointed to study how to make Am. industry more competitive.They’ve done a fine job.
Had visits by a little retarded girl who was chosen out of 30,000 “Special Olympics” participants to visit me. Then Rons former Karate instructor came by to present me with a Karate uniform including the black belt. Some taping & home.
