Usual staff meetings plus N.S.C. We’re still sweating out the Lebanon deal. Met with speechwriters re the Soviet speech. We want it to be a level headed approach to peace to reassure the eggheads & our European friends I dont plan to blow up the world. Met with Geo. Shultz. The Soviets are interested in a private back door channel. To the Situation Room for an N.S.P.G. meeting. It had to do with our upcoming visit by Premier Zhou of China. Off to Camp David. It was cold & gray but the fires were going. Ran a Golden Oldie movie—Gunga Din.
