President Reagan speaks with Assistant for National Security Affairs Robert McFarlane regarding the attempted defection of a Soviet sailor in New Orleans, LA.
Bilaterals at the hotel with Yasu 1st then Helmut K. These were both good meetings & lastly a meeting with the Klinghoffer family (he was the murder victim on the Achille Largo hi-jacking). It was a most emotional meeting. His widow is quite a wonderful little lady.
Then it was Marine 1 to Newark & A.F.1 to Andrews & another Marine 1 to Camp David. A bundle of homework awaited me. Then I got a call from Bud. It seems a Soviet seaman swam ashore from a Soviet ship in New Orleans. Through some bungle by our immigration people he wound up back on the ship. We are now working to get him back although now he has evidently been intimidated to where he’s saying he wants to return to the Soviet U.
