Once again it’s go to Camp David day but this will be the last for some time. Sen. Thad Cochrane came over & joined the friends of A.W.A.C.S. club. Met with Ted Bells new Nat. Commission on Excellence in Ed. It is a wide ranging, solid group & I’m convinced it will set out & make an improvement in the quality of ed. The 6 year old Poster girl for Nat. Epilepsy Foundation came in with her family and foundation officers. She’s a wonderfully sweet & pretty little thing. Thank heavens her seizures can now be controlled & she can live a normal life. Lunch for the Medal of Freedom awards—a warm & inspiring event. Tex Thornton—too ill to be here—medal received by his son. Mr. Lieberman of the Bar Assn., Bryce Harlow, Walter Judd, Dr. Grasso for his deceased wife Ella Grasso. He made mention for the fact that it was a Repub. Pres. who gave this recognition to Ella—a Dem. & Eubie Blake—a 98 yr. old composer & pianist. He responded by playing some of his music. Out to the Rose Garden to sign the Columbus Day Proclamation. A raft of paperwork & now off to “David.” Quite chilly at C.D.—but nice in front of the fire. Ran a movie which was well acted but somehow just missed—“True Confessions.”
