An old friend P.M. of Singapore Lee Kwan Yew arrived. We had the usual ceremony, meeting & State Dinner. He’s truly one of the worlds great statesmen. He’s just visited China—his old friend Chairman Deng. His observations were very informative as were his observations on the Philippines & Pres. Marcos.
A swearing in ceremony for Jim Miller who leaves the Fed. Trade Commission to be Dir. of O.M.B. Then after lunch an N.S.C. meeting about the hi-jacked Italian cruise ship. The terrorists have claimed to kill 2 Americans—no confirmation. We are planning a naval operation employing the “Seals six.” It’s a high risk effort but we feel justified.
