All 31 people aboard a Midwest Express Airlines DC-9 are killed when the Atlanta-bound jetliner crashes just after takeoff from Milwaukee's Mitchell Field.
A mixed emotions photo with Rick Burt & Gail—now off to W. Germany to be Mr. & Mrs. Ambas. We’ll miss them but I’m sure they’ll do a fine job. We had to withdraw my nominee for an important appointment. One Dem. Senator on the committee that must advise & consent dug up an article our candidate had written many years ago. He was going to use it to charge prejudice etc. We couldn’t subject a good man to that. The lynch mob is still active. A photo op with the woman member of the Fed. Reserve Board, Martha Seger & her family. Dick Wirthlin came by—he’s concerned about possible problems if I’m defeated on vetoes etc. Then it was lunch with about 100 women (Repub.) state legislators from all over the country.
George S. came in & he & Bud & I agreed on a move to hopefully head off a veto override on the S. Africa sanctions bill. I’m going to issue an exec. order calling for all the good points in the bill but vetoing the bill because of some of the unacceptable features. A lengthy taping session for a half dozen causes then off to Camp David.
