Key Facts
President Reagan greets President of the People's Republic of China Li Xiannian.
President Reagan and President of the People's Republic of China Li Xiannian discuss Taiwan.
Pres. Li of China arrives at 10 A.M. A beautiful day—bright & temp. only in the upper 70’s. Pres. Li is quite frail, so we had chairs on the podium—standing only for the Nat. Anthems & our own speeches. Then into the W.H. for a photo op. in the Green room & then our plenary meeting in the Blue Room. I think things went well. Taiwan was 1st on his agenda & I repeated our position—it’s a Chinese problem for them to settle peacefully. I was able to tell him all problems had been resolved for our agreement on Nuclear power.
Meeting ended about 11 A.M. Nancy & I saw them off at the diplomatic entrance.
Upstairs I got out of my “store bought clothes” & laid down for awhile.
An afternoon of reading, homework et al: Then the State dinner. It was somewhat abbreviated—no receiving line (at Pres. Li’s request). Also he went home before entertainment & so did I. But it was an enjoyable affair. [. . .]
