Diary Entry - 07/14/1986

Key Facts
President Reagan participates in a meeting to discuss NASA's plan for implementing recommendations made by the Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident.
The President and First Lady host a luncheon for recipients of the National Medal of Arts Award.
Richard W. Miller becomes the first FBI agent convicted of espionage.
No crisis over the weekend so staff meetings were routine. Then Jim Fletcher came by to report on N.A.SA. It looks like we cant get a new shuttle in the air until the 1st quarter of ’88.
Then lunch in the East Room to present 12 Arts Awards. Nancy read the citation & I handed out the medals.
James Broyhill (Cong.) & his wife for some campaign photos. He’s been appointed Senator to replace East (suicide). Of course he’ll have to run in this ’86 election.
Cap came by for his regular meeting. Cong. is trying to get by with no pay raise for mil. personnel. That would be a shame. We have the highest level of quality in uniform we’ve ever had & they deserve better. Did some taping after my haircut—then upstairs. Merme & Dennis were here for dinner.
