President Reagan meets with Members of the Cabinet to discuss the budget and immigration.
A busy but not exciting day. Reviewed our budget figures for 82, 83 & 84—high interest rates have darkened them some. Met with Polish-Am. leaders followed by Italian-Am. leaders. Both groups seem very supportive. Our Ethnic Americans are pretty solid with regard to basic values. We’re still at it on our immigration problems. Worst is how to return to Castro 1000 criminals & mentally deranged he sent here in the boat lift. Met with Pres. Thorn of the European Commen. Council—he’s here for the Ottawa Summit this weekend. Loyal & Edith arrived for his honorary membership in the Irish college of surgeons. This is 1st time they’ve ever awarded it in a country other than Ireland. They’re coming here because of his health. That’ll be tomorrow at the Irish Embassy.
