President Reagan meets with bipartisan Congressional Leaders to discuss the recent G7 Economic Summit in Williamsburg, VA.
President Reagan congratulates the Philadelphia 76'ers basketball team for winning the 1983 National Basketball Championship.
Sen. M. Wallop came to the Oval office. He makes a good case that we are actually further ahead on laser technology & could carry out my idea of a defense against nuclear missiles much earlier if there wasn’t bureaucratic foot dragging. Met with bipartisan leadership of both houses to report on Wmsburg & to discuss START negotiations. Tip & Bob Byrd conspicuous by their absence. Good meetings—then adjourned to Rose Garden where I made statement on changes in our negotiations in START. A lot of Ambassadors, the Scowcroft Commission, Joint Chiefs of Staff etc. present. It was broadcast world wide. Later in morning went back to Rose Garden to congratulate Phil. 76rs who won the Nat. Basketball Championship. In to lunch with representative group of educators—all supportive of our commission report on educational needs. A Cab. meeting on farm problems, safety among Fed. workers etc. On this sunshiny day went out to S. Lawn & finished taping the “Young Am. Artists show” that was rained out Mon. Dick Wirthlin came by with latest poll figures—all looked much better—big gains in job approval etc. Maureen is here guesting with us.
