President Reagan meets Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher at Kensington Palace.
To the office of P.M. Fitzgerald for a private meeting. Then Nancy arrived and we went to the meeting of the Dail (Parliament). I addressed that body—the speech was televised. There was an interruption at my introduction. Three members—all left wingers—protested my presence & walked out. Other than that I was well received & took advantage of the opportunity to explain our Central Am. policy which is not understood in Ireland. I also called for the Soviets to join us in an effort for peace. The speech I learned was carried in Europe & caused quite a stir in my favor. We gave a lunch at the embassy for the Hillerys & the Fitzgeralds and then helicoptered off the lawn to the airport. There was a formal ceremony—review of troops & all and then it was A.F.1 to London. Our Ambas. Charlie Price & Carole met us & escorted us to the official greeting party headed by F.M. Sir Geoffrey Howe. We then helicoptered to Winfield House—our embassy. A half hour to wash up & we motorcaded to Kensington Palace for the formal welcoming. Met by Margaret Thatcher. I reviewed the Coldstream Guards—then we went into the castle for tea. Then back to Winfield for an enjoyable dinner with Charlie & Carole.
