Took Marine 1 down to Jack Kilpatricks in Va. for lunch. The Hatches car broke down—they hitched a ride back to Wash. with us. Signal of course had set up the usual phone system. They told Jack they could reach anyone in the world. He has a son—a Marine at an embassy in Africa & another who is on the U.S.S. Pratt in the Mediterranean. They reached the one in Africa but the Destroyer was out on maneuvers—only the Pres. could reach him. Jack told me all this at lunch. After lunch I had them try the Pratt so his young wife (Jack’s daughter-in-law) could talk to her husband. Sometimes this job is more fun than others.
