A presentation to the family of Capt. Joseph Rockefort—posthumous award of the Dist. Service Medal. He was the man who cracked the Japanese code in W.W. II which made possible our defeat of the vastly superior fleet off Midway—the most significant battle in the Pacific.
Then right after lunch 173 children 9 to 14 yrs. the winners nationwide of the Nat. Spelling Bee & the Individual Champ to whom I awarded the trophy. From the Rose Garden over to the C. of C. to address about 700 mainly business people on our plan for “Tort Reform.” To do something about the inability of businesses, Doctors, local govts. etc. to obtain liability insurance due to the runaway court decisions that are awarding mil’s. of $ damages to plaintiffs on the grounds of who has the deepest pockets—not who is to blame.
And now it’s off to Camp David.
