Staff time—decided on a statement to press on Soviet Embassy spy situation. Then about 1:30 P.M. I went into the press room with it.

Before that however there was our N.S.C. briefing—subject there was also our Marines & their part in the situation. An N.S.P.G. meeting to discuss George S.’s coming trip to Moscow & offer suggestions to him re subject matter.

I left that to attend a lunch in W.H. for the Corporate Sponsors of the Commemoration of the Bicentennial of the Const. One of them was Dwayne Andreas who came from Dixon, Ill. He was one of the kids I looked out for when I was Life Guard. Back to the Oval O. for the press announcement & photos with Howards transition team.

At 2 P.M. a Cabinet meeting—subject where do we go in these next 20 months. Then photos with outgoing Ambassadors. A drop by of my 2nd cousin Harold Waters, his wife & daughter. Dick Wirthlin with latest poll—a haircut & upstairs. Dennis left for Calif.
