P.M. Haughey of Ireland & his wife arrived. We had a big luncheon in the East room. It was a good get-together. Frank Patterson, the great Irish Tenor & his harpist wife Eily entertained. He explained what “Danny Boy” was before he sang it and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. I never knew it was a mother saying goodbye to her son who was going off to war.
