This was the day for the visit of Pres. Kirchslaeger of Austria. The weather turned bad so our welcoming ceremony was indoors (East Room). He & his wife are very nice & he was deeply moved when our Marine Orch. played the music that was played by Americans when the occupation ended and Austria regained it’s independence. We had a good meeting & I think we made him & his Ministers understand our situation in Central Am. Afternoon a Cabinet meeting on plans to get a handle on the Beltway Bandits. These are the hundreds of advisory & consulting groups which have become a $15 bil. item in our budget. Every admin. has tried to melt this down with no success. Well, we’re going after it. Actress Shelley Long came by—a very nice person—she is chairing our Bond sale program. State dinner was one of the best. A very warm atmosphere & everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Mel Torme & Peter Nero entertained magnificently. Many of our old friends from Calif. were here.
