We awoke to a solid snow cover but by late afternoon most of it had melted. At 8:45 I dropped by the S. Dining Rm. where Don R., Cap et al were breakfast ing with a sizeable group of Repub. Congressmen. I did some Q&A—it was a good session. They have a great concern about the budget—that with all it’s cuts we’ll ask for some increase in foreign aid. They are sure we’ll be hung out to dry if we do that. I’m inclined to think they are right. Back at the Oval O. a short meeting with Jonas Savimbi (Angola) he is a very impressive figure. I hope we can give him some practical help. The VP & I lunched together and then I met with a group called the Public Diplomacy group. They are the top leaders who have raised $3 mil. to put commercials supporting our programs on the air, a brief meeting with Bob Tuttle then over to the “Dip” room to do some taping.

At 7:15 on our way to the Hilton for the Conservative Pol. Action annual dinner & Conf. Shook 150 hands before dinner with 2000. Young Russian comic—8 yrs. now in the U.S. entertained. He is truly funny & now a dedicated American. I was very well received & my remarks were evidently better than I had thought them.
