Key Facts
President Reagan participates in a photo opportunity with Afghan children.
President Reagan participates in a meeting to discuss tax reform legislation his Chief of Staff and Senator Packwood (R-Oregon).
Another brkfst. drop by—this time the Sens. who were elected with me in 1980—a good give & take. Over to the Oval O. for staff & N.S.C. meetings and then 5 Afghan children were brought in. They were mere babys—but all victims of Soviet bombings. One little girl with her face virtually destroyed. Three with one arm each & one with only one leg. I’d like to send the photos to Gen. Sec. Gorbachev.
Sen. Bob Packwood came in. He’s taking his Finance Committee & Jim Baker to a “retreat” where they are going to work on tax reform. We came to an agreement on what part a tax would play in helping restore some of the things the House Ways & Means Committee took out of the tax reform.
In the afternoon I dropped by a meeting of Repub. Mayors, then briefed (on budget) for a large group of supporters at the E.O.B. Then a meeting with Sec. Shultz & finally a briefing on budget for a group of top C.E.O.’s in the Cab. room.
